FORESTRY IN THE SERVICE OF NATION: ICFRE TECHNOLOGIES


Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) has brought out this premium publication during the First Indian Forest Congress (IFC) 2011 with a view to provide a consolidated account of contributions made by the forestry sector to the nation over the years. It provides a comprehensive account of technologies and processes developed by ICFRE and its institutes spread across the country. The readers will also have an idea about history of scientific forestry in India, various functions of the forestry sector and achievements made by the Council.

The book begins with an introduction to forests and forestry in India followed by a brief history of scientific forestry in the country which has a rich legacy of more than a century. The research processes and extension activities of the Council have been discussed to provide an insight to the readers about the Research and Development in the forestry sector. The contributions made by the Council in the field of environmental management have been brought out with special reference to the consultancies undertaken. An account of national and international collaborative conservation programmes has also been provided.

The book presents pictorial details of different repositories like FRI Herbarium, National Forest Insect Collection, Xylarium, Fungi collection and Museums, besides Shatabdi Van Vigyan Kendra, Photo Gallery, Arboretum and Bambusetum.

The Council’s contributions in Community Participation through agroforestry practices and Joint Forest Management have been highlighted. An exhaustive list of both national and international publications by the foresters and scientists of ICFRE has also been made available in the present book for ready information and benefit of the readers.

The book thus brings out the services rendered by the foresters, forestry scientists and other researchers over the last 150 years to the notice of the people, planners, administrators, politicians, researchers and students etc. This publication will also draw the attention of people and researchers at large and help them to sensitize and inform about activities and achievements of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and its institutes towards a better understanding of the forestry sector.
