HIMALAYAN FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (HFRI),SHIMLA

Trainings Conducted during the Last Two Years:

 2015-16

1- Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla organized a one day meeting-cum-Camp workshop on “Cultivation of Atish (Aconitum heterophyllum) and Bankakri (Podophyllum hexandrum)” under NMPB, New Delhi funded project on 12th August, 2015 at Nichar, District Kinnaur (HP), which was attended by 34 participants from Nichar village of district, Kinnaur (HP).

2- A training programme on “Planting Stock Improvement Programme for Productivity Enhancement” under the Scheme “Training of Personnel of Other Services” of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, New Delhi was organized by the HFRI, Shimla from 7th to 9th September, 2015 at the institute. Participants from the Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Soil Conservation, Rural Development, Police, Custom, Revenue etc. of the state of Himachal Pradesh attended this training course.

3- To sensitize the farmers and field functionaries of HPSFD towards medicinal plants cultivation and conservation, a one day training and demonstration programme on ‘Cultivation of Atish, Ban Kakri and other important Temperate Medicinal Plants’ was organized by HFRI at Udaipur, Lahaul (H.P.) on 26th September, 2015 under the National Medicinal Plants Board, New Delhi funded research project.

52 progressive farmers of Pattan Valley of Lahaul & Spiti and frontline staff of Lahaul Forest Division participated in this training programme.

4- The institute organized a training programme on “Cultivation of Medicinal Plants” for other stakeholders at Wildlife Interpretation and Information Centre, Manali, District Kullu (H.P.) from 19th to 21st October, 2015. The training programme was funded by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India New Delhi, wherein, 40 participants from different stakeholders including members of village Panchayats, Non-Governmental Organizations, members of civil society, media persons and progressive farmers of Kullu district actively participated in the programme.

5- Two day’s training programme and exposure visit for the farmers of Lanabaka village district Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh was organized by Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla on 20th and 21st November, 2015 at Panchayat Bhawan, Lanabaka village on 20th November, 2015, which was attended by more than 25 participants.

The training programme and exposure visit was conducted under the project on ECO-WASH being implemented by this institute with the financial assistance of the Department from Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The trainees were also taken to award winning Nauni Panchayat of Solan district on 21st November, 2015. During this visit, the farmers were made aware of the activities like rain water harvesting, conservation and recharging of natural water resources, sanitation and hygiene.

6- For the benefit of field staff of J&K forest department, the Institute with the active support of State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), Jammu, organized a training programe on “Biological Control of Insect-pests and Diseases in Medicinal Plants” at Van Vigyan Kendra on 12th December, 2015. This training was primarily focused on the insect pests and disease incidences in the medicinal plants with special reference to the Western Himalayan region. 45 participants comprising of Forest Range Officers, Foresters and Forest Guards from Doda, Kishtwar, Bhadarwa and Jammu forest division participated in this training programme. Sh. Deepak Khanna, IFS, Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K State Forest Department was the Chief Guest in the inaugural session, while Dr. V.P. Tewari, Director, HFRI, Shimla presided over the function.

7- A five days training programme on “Bamboo Production, Management and Marketing to the Farmers of Himachal Pradesh” under Bamboo Technical Support Group (BTSG) Scheme of National Bamboo Mission (NBM) was organized by the institute at the behest of ICFRE, Dehradun in the Conference Hall of the institute from 14th -18th December, 2015.

The aim of the training programme was to promote bamboo cultivation amongst the farmers of the state of Himachal Pradesh. 25 farmers from different part of Himachal Pradesh attended the training programme enthusiastically. All the participants were also taken to the field at Dhadyarghat, where they were shown different Tissue Culture and Stem Cutting demonstration plantation of Dendrocalamus hamiltonii, which was earlier raised by the institute under DBT Funded project. Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Scientist-F HFRI, Shimla Coordinated this training programme.

8- Another training programme on “Cultivation of Atish, Ban Kakri, Chora and other important high valued Temperate Medicinal Plants” was organized by the institute at Krishi Vigyan Kerdra (KVK, SKUAST–Jammu), Bhadarwah, Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir) on 04th February, 2016 under the project funded by National Medicinal Plants Board, New Delhi. About 40 participants including progressive farmers of Bhadarwah region of Chenab Valley falling in Doda district of Jammu & Kashmir and frontline officers and staff of Department of Agriculture (J&K) stationed at Bhadarwah took active participation in the training programme.

9- An Interactive meeting on “Protection Technology for Control of Insect-pest and Diseases in Medicinal Plants” was organized by the institute at Kishtwar, Jammu on dated 04th February, 2016 under NMPB one of the components of the ‘National Medicinal Plants Board’, New Delhi funded project.

10- For the benefit of farmers from the village Lanabaka, district Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla on 16th February 2016, organized one day training programme in the conference hall of the institute. The training revolved around Water Conservation, Sanitation, Hygiene and Organics and which was attended by twenty five farmers from this village which has been adopted as a Model Village by the institute.

11- A training programme on “Cultivation of Atish, Ban Kakri, Chora and other important Temperate high valued Medicinal Plants” was organized at Govt. Senior Secondary School Bhutti, Kotgarh, Shimla (H.P.) on 17th February 2016, under one of the components of the ‘National Medicinal Plants Board’, New Delhi funded project. About 40 participants including progressive farmers of Kotgarh region took active participation in the said programme.

12- For the benefit of frontline field staff of Himachal Pradesh Forest Department the institute organized a three days training “Capacity Building Programme” from 24th to 26th February 2016. The training was conducted in collaboration with Himachal Pradesh Forest Department (HPFSD) and about 35 field functionaries posted in various Forest Divisions across the state participated in this training programme..

13- A three days training programme on “Eco-restoration of Wastelands” was organized by the Institute for the Personnel of Other Services under the Scheme “Training of Personnel of Other Services” of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt. of India, New Delhi at the Institute from 02.03.2016 to 04.03.2016. Thirty one participants representing various department viz., Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Ayurveda, Block Development Office, Eco Task Force, Research Organizations and Educational Institutions took active part in this training programme.

14- The institute organized one day training programme on the “Management of Insect Pest and diseases of Juniper” at Reckongpeo, District Kinnaur on 10th March, 2016, which was attended by about 40 farmers & frontline staff of Forest Department of Kinnaur Forest Divsion Himachal Pradesh.

8 With an objective to upgrade farmers’ skill towards cultivation of medicinal plants in the tribal region and also to sensitize them towards conservation of these high valued medicinal plants growing in their natural habitat of Himalayan region, the institute also organized one day Camp Workshop on ‘Cultivation of Himalayan Medicinal Plants' at Nichar, Kinnaur (H.P.) on 11th March, 2016 under National Medicinal Plants Board, New Delhi funded project. About 40 participants including Chairman BDC, Pradhan, Up-Pradhan & members of Nichar Panchayat took active part in the said camp workshop.

2016-2017

15- For the benefit of field functionaries of the Himachal Pradesh State Forest Department and for the students of collages located in the state, a 03 days training programme on “Ecology and biological control of insects including butterflies in forest eco-systems” was organized under the Externally Aided Research Project titled “Ecological studies on distributional patterns and food plant resources of butterflies along altitudinal gradients in different ecosystems of Western Himalayas subalpine forests of Himachal Pradesh”. The training programme was organized from 29th August-31st August, 2016 at the institute, where, 20 field functionaries and students actively participated in the training.

16- The institute at the behest of ICFRE, Dehra Dun conducted five days training programme on “Bamboo Production, Management and Marketing to the Farmers of Himachal Pradesh” under Bamboo Technical Support Group Scheme of National Bamboo Mission, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The training was organized from 5th-9th September 2016 with the main objective to promote bamboo cultivation amongst the farmers of the state of Himachal Pradesh. The participants were also taken to the demonstration plantation of Hill Bamboo established by the institute in the Chhichhad forest near Narkanda.

17- With a view to enhance the knowledge and also to sensitize senior functionaries of HP Forest department towards various Silviculture and Genetic issues of Forest Management, a two days training programme on “Silviculture and Genetics Aspects of Forest Management” from 28th to 29th September, 2016 was organized by the institute for. About 15 Forest Officers of the rank of Dy. CF and CF attended this training. Dr. S.P. Vasudeva, IFS PCCF & HoFF, HPSFD, Shimla inaugurated the training programme.

18- For the benefit of various stakeholders, Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla organized a three days training and demonstration programme from 13th-15th, October, 2016 on “Sustainable utilization, conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants". About 20 participants representing members of Gram Panchyats, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, NGO’s, Mahila Mandals and frontline staff from Chopal Forest Division were present during this training. Dr. V.P. Tiwari, Director HFRI inaugurated the programme on 13th October, 2016.

19- A one day training programme titled “Sustainable Development through Agroforestry” was organized by the Institute for the farmers of district Kullu at one of its Van Vigyan Kendra, Jagatsukh, Manali, Distt. Kullu on 27th October, 2016. About 30 farmers and horticulturist of the district participated in this training programme. Sh. B.L. Negi, Conservator of Forests, Kullu Forest Circle, Kullu inaugurated the training programme.

20- The Institute in collaboration with the Research Wing of Himachal Pradesh Forest Department (HPFSD), Sundernagar organized a three days training programme on “Capacity Building Programme for the Frontline Field Staff of Himachal Pradesh Forest Department” from 22nd to 24th November, 2016. About 31 frontline field functionaries posted in various Forest Circles and Divisions viz. Kinnaur, Bharmour, Chamba, Chopal, Theog, Rampur, Wildlife Sarahan, Shimla and Wildlife Shimla actively participated in this training.

21- To reach the target groups comprising of farmers and the local communities in the mandated states in a more coordinated way, a one day training-cum-demonstration programme on “Cultivation of Atish, Bankakri, Chora and other important temperate medicinal plants” was organized by the institute on 29th November, 2016 at Bhalla, Distt. Doda, Jammu & Kashmir. 43 participants attended this one day programme and showed interest during this day long deliberations.

22- For the benefit of farmers of Jammu region, HFRI organized a training programme on “Nursery Techniques and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants” on 2nd December 2016 at Van Vigyan Kendra, Janipur, Jammu (J&K). A total of 36 (thirty six) farmers from different parts of Jammu region participated in this training programme. Experts from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Jammu were also present. Sh. B.M. Sharma, Director, State Forest Research Institute, Jammu (J&K) inaugurated the training programme.

23- A three days training programme on “Management of Insect- Pest and Diseases in the Nursery” from 6th -8th December, 2016 was conducted at HFRI. Major focus of the training was on the insect-pests and disease incidences in the nurseries of forestry species and their management and to generate awareness amongst the various stakeholders in the state.

24- A three days training programme on “Eco-restoration of Wastelands” was organized by HFRI, Shimla from 15th - 17th December, 2016. A total of 30 participants coming from the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, Educational Institutions, field Rural Development Deptt. and Research Institutes participated in the training.

25- A three days training on “Biodiversity Assessment, Monitoring and Conservation" was organized by the institute for the frontline field functionaries of Chamba Wildlife Forest Division, Himachal Pradesh by HFRI on 30th January to 1st February 2017 with the major objective to generate awareness amongst the grass root level officials about the significance of biodiversity, its assessment and conservation.

26- HFRI, Shimla organized HPSFD funded three days training programme on ‘Seed and Nursery Techniques of Juniper, Conifers and High Altitude Medicinal Plants’ for field functionaries of H.P. State Forest Department at Nogli (Rampur) Shimla during 2nd to 4th February, 2017. 21 delegated from Wildlife Division Sarahan and Rampur Forest Division participated in this training programme.

27- The institute organized three days training on “Integrated Pest Management in Forestry and control of Insect Pest & Disease in Medicinal Plants” from 16th February, 2017. Major focus of the training was to control the Insect pest and disease incidences in Medicinal plants & IPM in the forestry and also to promote awareness amongst various stakeholders in the state of Himachal Pradesh..

28- A training programme on “Integrated approaches towards sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Organic Farming” was organized by the institute for the farmers of Lanabaka Panchayat during 20th - 21st February 2017. The training was organized for creating awareness amongst the farmers for conservation of natural water resources, their hygiene and promoting organics on their farm under the project on ECO-WASH funded by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, Govt. of India.

29- A training and demonstration programme on ‘Mass Production of Kaphal Stock in the Nursery’ was organized by HFRI, Shimla on 27th February 2017 at Shimla. 31 farmers participated in this training programme. The training programme was conducted with a view to popularize Kaphal- an important wild fruit tree plantations in and around Shimla town to augment farming income.

8- Training on ‘Biological Diversity Act, 2002’, was conducted from 1-3 February 2017. The training was attended by 30 participants who included faculty from university/ colleges, scientists, forest staff, research scholars as well as Ayurvedic / Siddha medical practitioners/ researchers

9- Training on Plant Taxonomy was conducted from 05.10.2016 to 07.10.2016 for teachers, Scientists and research workers from college, universities and other research organizations. It was attended by 16 members.

10- Training on Techniques in Bio-fertilizers Production, Maintenance and Application in Nursery and Field" to various stake holders viz., College Teachers, Students, Farmers, Tree Growers and Commercial Entrepreneurs (25 Nos.) at IFGTB.

11- Summer project training at Forest Pathology Lab., Forest Protection Division, IFGTB, Coimbatore. Total of 06 students (M.Sc. Botany, Biotechnology and Microbiology) from different colleges and of Tamil Nadu underwent the said training.

Rain Forest Research Institute Jorhat

2015-2017

1- RFRI organized a Field Functionaries Training on Bamboo sponsored by Orissa Bamboo Development Agency, Bhubaneswar under National Bamboo Mission from 6th to 10th April, 2015. Total of 17 Officials participated in the training

2- RFRI organized a training from 8th to 10th April, 2015 for the 'Range Forest Officer Trainees' from CASFOS, Burnihat (Batch 2015-2016) on various topics, viz. Genetic Improvement of important forest species of NE; Agarwood, Seed Technology; Propagation, Nursery Management and Cultivation of Bamboo; Diseases of forest nursery/ plantation and their management; Vermicomposting and Biofertilizer Applications in Forestry; Application of GIS in Forestry and Statistics. Total of 39 trainees participated in the training programme.

3- RFRI organized a scientific presentation on ‘Mandatory requirements for designing of plant tissue culture laboratory and Standard Operating Procedures for tissue culture production facility’ to create awareness and update the knowledge on establishment of Tissue Culture Laboratory on 20th July, 2015. Presentation was delivered by Mr. Sabu Thomas from ELS Instruments Ltd., Bengaluru.

4- Training cum workshop on Bamboos Handicraft (Direct to Consumer Programme of ICFRE) was held from 27th July to 8th August, 2015 for 21 trainees from the Institution for Culture and Rural Development (I-CARD), Baghchung, Jorhat consisting of school dropout students of Mishing Tribe from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, under the Project "Capacity building, skill up-gradation of artisans and promotion of traditional Bamboo handicraft and art with improved technology, suitable design and value addition".

5- One day training programme was organized on 11th August, 2015 for 15 farmers from SHEWA, a Jorhat based NGO, Bahona Jorhat on bamboo propagation and nursery management practices, different product development activities and Bamboo treatment at Bamboo composite centre. They were also explained about bamboo composite centre where various machines are used for bamboo handicraft sector.

6- A group of 35 Forest Guard Trainees from Assam Forest Guard School, Makum visited RFRI on 20th August, 2015. Training was imparted on bamboo as raw material in the world market. Field demonstrations on "Bamboo Propagation and Nursery Management" were also given. The team visited Bamboo Composite Centre where they were explained about bamboo preservation techniques and different products of bamboo.

7- One day training programme was organized on 27th September, 2015 for 38 farmers from Seva Kendra (NGO), Dibrugarh on lac cultivation, techniques of bamboo propagation and nursery management practices, different product development activities and bamboo treatment at Bamboo Composite Centre

8- Training cum workshop on Bamboo Handicrafts (Direct to Consumer Programme of ICFRE) was held from 2nd to 13th November, 2015 for 27 trainees from Senapati District, Manipur and Karbi-Anglong District, Assam under the Project "Capacity building, skill up-gradation of artisans and promotion of traditional Bamboo handicraft and art with improved technology, suitable design and value addition".

9- Exposure visit for a group of 17 Forest Guards with their Lecturer from State Forest Training Institute, Roing, Arunachal Pradesh on 27th November, 2015. Training cum field demonstrations on Bamboo Propagation, Nursery Management & Bamboo Preservation Techniques were given & different product of Bamboo in Bamboo Composite Centre were shown

10- Training cum workshop from 1st to 13th February, 2016 on Bamboo Handicrafts (Direct to Consumer Programme of ICFRE) was held for trainees from Meghalaya and Lakhimpur, Sibsagar and Jorhat Districts of Assam under the Project "Capacity building, skill up-gradation of artisans and promotion of traditional Bamboo handicraft and art with improved technology, suitable design and value addition". Total participants were 22.

11- RFRI organized a training from 4th to 6th February, 2016 on "Agarwood" for 2 trainees from Maharastra and Jorhat.

12- Training Workshop on "National Database Web Portal" was held at RFRI, Jorhat organized by BTSG, ICFRE for the Forest Officers of North Eastern States on 11th and 12th February, 2016

13- Refresher training programme on Self Help Groups-cum Exposure visit for NGOs was held at RFRI, on18th February, 2016, organized by NABARD, Jorhat in collaboration with RFRI,. Total participants were 25 from different NGOs.

14- RFRI organized a training from 29th February to 4th March, 2016 on "Propagation, Nursery Management, Commercial Cultivation and Value Addition of Bamboo" for the trainees of Gujarat and Maharastra, sponsored by "DHRUVA-BAIF, Navsari, Gujarat. Total participants were 5.

15- RFRI organized a training for the farmers, Artisans from Tinsukia District of Assam on "Bamboo based Livelihood generation and other Tree species" from 14th to 15th March, 2016. Total participants were 15.

16- A 3 day's training programme was organized for the trainee FROs from CASFOS, Burnihat from 25th April, 2016 to 7th May, 2016 at RFRI. Total participants were 29.

17- RFRI conducted a 16 days training programme on skill development on Nursery Management at Garupaban JFMC, Geleki, Sivasagar Forest Division, Sivasagar (Assam) from 8th to 23rd August, 2016 under the Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation. Total participants were 35

18- A 17 days training cum workshop on “Skill Development and Capacity Building of Rural Youth for Livelihood Generation through Bamboo Handicrafts” was held at RFRI from 6th to 22nd September, 2016. Total participants were 32.

19- One day technology transfer cum awareness training programme was organized by RFRI, Jorhat on 11th September, 2016 at Market Place, Teok, Jorhat to create awareness among the local community about the value added products from locally available fruits and health benefits of consumption. Total participants were 50

20- RFRI organized a one day "Skill Development Training on Lac Cultivation & Processing" on 1st Nov, 2016. Twenty five participants from RFRI Demo Village, NGOs and SHGs of Jorhat district participated in the training.

21- Two days training was imparted to Sri Kaushik Tusnial, Karimganj, Assam on Agarwood: Nursery and Plantation Management, Artificial Inoculation of Agar Tree, on 28th Nov, 2016 to 29th Nov, 2016.

22- A 3 days training on “Principles of Nursery Management", "Integrated Management of Nursery Pest and Disease", "Package of Practices of important fuel/grass/fodder species", "Vermicomposting Technology and its applications", "Vegetative Propagation techniques" and "seed Technology" from 27th Dec, 2016 to 29th Dec, 2016 was organized by RFRI for the field workers of Aaranyk, Guwahati (Assam).The training was sponsored by Aaranyk, Guwahati (Assam). Total participants were 3.

23- The Institute organized a one week training cum workshop on "Capacity Building and Skill Development of Bamboo Handicrafts" from 5th to 11th July, 2016 at Kasturba Gram Seva Kendra, Parijat, Bokota, Sivasagar for the local people of Bokota, Sivasagar of Assam.

24- The institute organized a one week training cum workshop on "Capacity Building and Skill Development of Bamboo Handicrafts" from 12th to 18th July, 2016 at Gramin Cane & Bamboo Center, Na Nath Gaon, Bokota, Sivasagar for the local people of Bokota, Sivasagar of Assam.

25- A five day's training programme on “Cultivation of wild mushrooms” was organized by RFRI, Jorhat from 26th to 30th September, 2016. The training programme was sponsored by North-East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR).

26- RFRI, Jorhat Organized a five days training on "Bamboo Value Chain" from 10th Nov,2016 to 14th Nov,.2016 in collaboration with G.B.Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development, NE unit, Itanagar (AP) for the people of Miao and Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh under the project "Landscape Initiative for the Far-Eastern Himalayas (Hi-LIFE)". The training was sponsored by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal.

27- RFRI conducted a two day training workshop on "Bamboo Resource Development for Addressing Livelihood Concerns of Communities" for 23 IFS Officers from different states on 22nd Nov, 2016 and 23rd Nov, 2016 which was sponsored by MoEF&CC, Govt. of India.
